Sapitwa Healers" Of Malawi's ancient magic Nsupa Gourds, lies"

If there is one thing many of us Malawians have feared so much in history and eyed with suspicion as being harmful and witchcraft then it must be the Nsupa, a narrow necked calabash used by asing’anga (traditional healers) for storing traditional medicine and charms for magic. 

Ancient kings are believed to have used the Nsupa for drinking wine made from tea like leaves used by healers to cure stomach ailments, lemon and sugar cane juice. Calabashes made from gourds are used for drinking locally brewed beer.

The ancient Nsupa is usually made from the African Wine Kettle Gourd which is globally known and used for making other things like beautiful drums.

Now some of the most powerful ancient kings of this land more than 2000 years ago had Nsupas which are buried under some trees growing on anthills which must not be touched as that is like their “grave” say Sapitwa and “Kuba” healers.

These are some of the facts you will rarely hear on the streets of Malawi because some young untrained vendors masquerading as asing’anga and those who visit them create lies about the wooden looking Nsupa talking like a human being and having mere mortal beings giving it powers.

Although they use nyanga for mostly self-protection (kukhwima) rituals against forces of darkness, many of the elderly nyanga healers openly say they can’t compete with Chauta, Namalenga, Mphambe (God) who remains Almighty forever and ever unlike some of this generation who insult the God of their ancestors by spreading lies and gossip argue the healers.

There are also nyanga healers of this generation who are plainly satanic and ‘afiti’ (witches) say Sapitwa healers so this blog won’t bother investigating or trying to get information to reveal their dark secrets.

This blog is once again not endorsing any beliefs posted here but just documenting ancient history in the way the Egyptian and Greek ones have been fully documented online and many books written about them including the names of their ancient kings known as pharaohs and ‘gods’.

Now, the Nsupa magical gourd is as historic as time in many African countries, Malawi inclusive so people have a right to know about this object some fear more than God who remains Supreme!

It is believed to ‘dance’ and rotate with the hand of an unseen spirit moving it and not because of matsenga (magical spells) because all healers whether good and bad know that God (Chauta, Namalenga, Mulungu) is All powerful.

Blackened ones which are common among Mozambican traditional healers form part of the evil Maula for magical oracles with its goat horns and skin made from sea creatures. Such scary healers do not mince words that they use demons and so-called secrets sourced by fallen angels.

The good news is that the Maula is something many have advised the Malawi Traditional Healers Association to ban because it is the root cause of many village disputes and conflicts as most of its contents and sayings are considered lies and promote hatred and divisions .

Now the bottle bowling pin shape Nsupa is usually made from the African Wine Kettle Gourd belonging to the pumpkin family and on its own has no powers at all and cannot talk so that we hear it! Healers insist it speaks through their minds spiritually.

African Wine Kettle Gourds are planted and greenish when ripe and known as Mphonda in Malawi but the ones that are not eaten. They are then dried out, removing seeds and left to turn golden.

Although other African countries covet the large ones for large drums, the Nsupa is also used as a magical gourd plain, varnished, stained or painted. 

After that it is dressed with waist-beads worn by women and some healers reportedly use the beads their wives have used in their rituals but not the red ones which mean “stop don’t touch” when a woman is on her cycles says a healer of  ”Kuba” they call Mount Namuli?

They claim the Nsupa represents female energy hence its hourglass figure and beads worn around its ‘waist’. Women never ever use Nsupa for rituals because it is believed to become ‘dirty’ once a menstruating woman touches it as that blood is viewed as unclean. 

The Nsupa historically has been placed on a square altar drawn with ufa woyera (refined white maize flour) and four crosses representing the northern, southern, eastern and western winds. The northern winds were believed to produce rain and the southern showers.

Ancient African traditional healers believed in female and male energy with 3 spirits representing the feminine and 4 the masculine both pulling each other to produce some kind of light usually in the form of lightning and source of 7 colours using a metal two-edged sword known as kandalanga or lupanga.

However, the more evil part of the Nsupa is that it involves kukhwima rituals where blood to wash it is somehow sought magically so asing’anga who use it admit ‘demonic’ powers and give the Nsupa female names like Miriam and Chichewa ones they refused to reveal. 

But the fact remains; the Nsupa on its own is like a harmless pumpkin but the magical rituals it goes through is what is believed to give it powers and a so-called mind of its own. 

Despite this the fact remains that the Nsupa is part of our history and culture even the negative parts like the evil Maula which has caused unnecessary fear and confusion in many villages by targeting innocent people and requiring its users are drunkards and womanizers as ancient healers believed demons spread through sex which involves blood.

That is why good morals and virginity were encouraged for both men and women and the asing’anga amizimu (traditional healers specializing in spirits) also included celibate men believed to have more powers.


Celibate women were also believed to be more powerful spiritually and married couples would abstain from sex during certain rituals including rain-seeking ones.

Tracing footsteps to lead me home

Greetings from the Warm Heart Africa, Malawi.

I'm a Malawian journalist who grew up in many countries including South Africa, Belgium, then West Germany, UK, Washington DC and New York in the US and I love New York.

Trying to come up with the production of my life and by compiling some of my 1000 poems into a book called ‘Tracing Footsteps’ to lead me Home with excellent photography.

I also plan to film award winning documentaries based on the history of this ancient land called Malawi and the mysteries of Sapitwa and the Sirius star.
